Val d’Orcia on My Mind,
the bond between man and landscape
The “Val d’Orcia on My Mind” photography campaign aimed to investigate and recount the deep connection between people and the Val d’Orcia landscape, an icon of Tuscany and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, through images.
The project actively involved the local community, who were invited to contribute to the creation of a shared digital heritage comprising authentic and meaningful photographs. The initiative began with the recovery of archival photographic material to help understand the historical and cultural evolution of the Val d’Orcia landscape. Particular attention was given to themes such as work, nature, places, society and events.
This preparatory phase led to the creation of a new photographic reportage dedicated to the people, stories, and landscapes of Val d’Orcia following its UNESCO recognition. Comparing historical and contemporary images has highlighted the recent evolution of the territory and provided a layered, participatory visual narrative.
There is a place in the Val d’Orcia landscape where human labour has become inextricably linked to its extraordinary beauty, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is precisely this awareness that inspired the project, which enhances the visual and emotional memory of those who experience the area every day.
The project also included live events and activities, such as themed excursions dedicated to culture, tradition and nature. These outings gave the community the opportunity to participate actively and collectively create an emotional itinerary through Val d’Orcia.
All materials collected and produced were digitised and made available online in the photographic archive to amplify their impact and promote widespread, accessible use beyond local boundaries.
Val d’Orcia on My Mind was realised with the support of the Ministry of Culture under Law No. 77 of 20 February 2006, which provides special measures for the protection and enjoyment of Italian sites of cultural, landscape and environmental interest included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Remember, tell, live!
