Development of infrastructure to support sustainable mobility for the enhancement of the UNESCO Site Val…
Discover the Val d’Orcia UNESCO World Heritage Site through hiking and walking trails
The project’s main goal is to restore and improve the cultural, environmental and historical significance of Val d’Orcia by updating and extending the trail network.
The activities were divided into specific actions and objectives, with the ultimate goal of creating and implementing an efficient, usable hiking network. The following steps were therefore taken:
- The recovery of some old trails;
- The redevelopment and maintenance of the Val d’Orcia trails;
- Cataloguing itineraries;
- The promotion of the trail network through an informative publication containing descriptions, photos and maps of the routes.
In addition, educational events were organised for industry experts and key stakeholders to promote and disseminate the project.
These activities were designed to:
- Provide a fair and broad understanding of the local area and the environment as a universal value;
- Lead to a rediscovery of the importance of the relationship between humans and nature.
- Develop useful links to promote local produce such as wine, oil, cheese and cereals;
- Diversify, de-seasonalise and expand the tourist offering by promoting environmental tourism (cycling, horse riding and hiking);
- Promote the environment and landscape through the network of trails.
The final outcome was the creation of the ‘Guide to the Trails of Val d’Orcia’, which was distributed at local tourist offices and sold in the shop on the official Val d’Orcia World Heritage website.
