Val d’Orcia on My Mind,
the bond between man and landscape
Val d’Orcia on My Mind
The bond between man and landscape
The photographic campaign promoted by the Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park of Val d’Orcia is now underway and will run until September. Citizens will be invited to actively participate in the creation of the photographic material. The goal of the campaign is to collect the most authentic photographic testimonies of the evolution of this territory — an icon of Tuscany worldwide — as it exists in the minds and memories of those who live there, and to turn it into a digitized cultural heritage resource.
There is a place of the soul where human labor has become inseparably intertwined with the extraordinary beauty of its landscape — a place now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Launching now and continuing through September, “Val d’Orcia on My Mind” is a unique and unrepeatable concept — a photographic campaign promoted by the Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park of Val d’Orcia to celebrate the exceptional and universal value of this connection.
The project will initially focus on retrieving archival photographic material useful for understanding the history and evolution of Val d’Orcia’s cultural landscape. This research phase will help identify key historical themes captured through photography — such as labor, nature, places, society, and events — and provide a framework to analyze the contemporary visual identity of Val d’Orcia in comparison to its past. This brief survey will lay the foundation for a new photographic reportage, capturing the people, stories, and landscapes of Val d’Orcia in the era following its UNESCO recognition. Digitizing archive material and producing new photography will help highlight the evolutionary traces of the area’s recent history.
The promotion of the project will also take place online, expanding its impact beyond the local level. All digitized material will be made available on a dedicated webpage. The project will also include thematic excursions (focused on culture, tradition, nature, etc.), offering moments for discovery and active participation from residents, while creating a photographic itinerary through Val d’Orcia.
